The Quiet Erosion of Fiduciary Responsibility
🔥 As I was working on some marketing this weekend, which is painful for me because I am not in advertising, I continued to see firms and fiduciaries promoting themselves to the public while simultaneously contradicting the very words they were using. It became concerning.
An example of these popular slogans, are the frequent use of phrases such as “shared interests,” “alignment,” and "“partnership.” These are certainly valuable ingredients for creating trust and fostering long-term relationships. However, in many cases, the first message is confusing and blurring the public's understanding of what a fiduciary is and what fiduciary responsibility means.
A fiduciary is valuable because they exercise independent judgment on our behalf. Strong fiduciary ethics are not demonstrated through agreement. They are demonstrated through independence, diligence, transparency, and the courage to act in the best interests of others, even when doing so is difficult. 🧨
When professionals promote themselves as merely telling people what they already believe, the value of professional judgment is diminished. The public does not need fiduciaries to echo their opinions; they need fiduciaries willing to stand behind, present and sometimes defend their independent work and provide honest guidance.
Whether serving as a trustee, board member, executive, accountant, attorney, or other professional entrusted with protecting the interests of others, a fiduciary's duty is to bring expertise, objectivity, and professional judgment to the table. Their role is not to simply validate existing opinions or follow instructions without question.
This is where much of today's professionals defined cultures, strategies or disciplines become confusing. Organizations often promote complete alignment with those they serve while simultaneously emphasizing independent thinking. While these concepts are not entirely incompatible, they create a tension that is rarely acknowledged and does leave people wondering - or other words confused and fearful.
🐦🔥 Independence naturally brings about differing opinions, difficult conversations and working toward a compromise.
Effective fiduciaries support and guide the people they serve, that duty is often uncomfortable. The role requires asking difficult questions, challenging assumptions, identifying risks others prefer to ignore, or recommending a course of action that is unpopular, but it is accurate and relevant to the situation.
💫 Trust is not created through being terminally agreeable. Trust is earned when professionals have the willingness and ethical fortitude to lead, advise, and protect—even when the message is not the one people hoped to hear. 🎆
